Inspired by the books The Wild Robot and The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown, join our Robot Generals, Sherrie Dennis and Dr. Donna Jagielski, for three days of getting to know the Edison robot and its coding platforms (EdBlocks, EdScratch, and EdPy). Engineer solutions to Roz (Wild Robot) inspired challenges our Robot Generals have dreamed up. You will even get a chance to program Edisons to line dance! Starting with a simple bar code scan and progressing through drag-and-drop block Scratch programming, and ending with Python – a legitimate programming language used in the real world, teachers from a wide grade range will experience how they can engage their students with these powerful little robots. Teachers will receive a STEMAZing kit with 12 robots, 6 EdMats, 6 EdCreate kits, rechargeable batteries and more. Everything you need to establish a small army of programmable robots will be included in the STEMAZing kit valued at more than $600.

STEMAZing Kit Pickup: All participants must pick up their STEMAZing Kit the week before their institute strand at the Pima County School Superintendent's Office (200 N Stone Avenue, Tucson, AZ  85701). Kits will not be mailed to participants.

NOTE: You are not allowed to attend this strand if you have participated in a three-day STEMAZing Institute Edison strand in the past. We hope your robot army continues to grow but want to let other educators take advantage of the same opportunity you had. If you attended in the past and would like to participate without receiving a STEMAZing Kit as a refresher, please contact DaNel Hogan to discuss this option.

Audience: 3rd-12th Grade Teachers from Southern Arizona

(In order to maximize the impact of this workshop, only educators who work directly with students will be allowed to register and receive a kit. Please contact DaNel Hogan if you would like to attend but are in an administrative role.)

Facilitators: Sherrie Dennis – STEMAZing Robot General and Manager of STEM Curriculum and Instruction at SARSEF and Dr. Donna Jagielski – STEMAZing Robot General and Director of STEAM Makerspace Programs at Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale

Location: Zoom - link will be sent the week before the institute. You must have the ability to join the sessions via Zoom. Please download the most recent update to Zoom.

Course Dates: Tuesday, June 1 - Thursday, June 3, 2021

Cost: $75 for three days of world-class professional development AND a STEMAZing Kit valued at more than $600

Daily Schedule for Virtual STEMAZing Institute Strand

8:30 am – Zoom Meeting Opens

9:00 am – STEMAZing Session 1 Synchronous on Zoom

11:00 am – 30 minute lunch and 1.5 hours of asynchronous activities offline

1:00 am – STEMAZing Session 2 Synchronous on Zoom

Special thanks to the 2021 STEMAZing Institute title sponsor, Tucson Electric Power! The generous STEMAZing Kits of equipment and supplies teachers receive would not be possible without their continued support.

This workshop is part of the STEMAZing Institute. The STEMAZing Project’s philosophy on teacher professional development is simple: It must be hands-on and engaging – putting the educators in the seat of the students to experience STEM lessons firsthand. It must provide the educators with the equipment and supplies they need to implement the lessons and activities in their classrooms the next day if they choose. It must be facilitated by master educators who have themselves been in the classroom.
