This literacy-based strand will focus on the book The Moon written by Dr Sanlyn Buxner and contributed to by Dr. Larry Lebofsky.

Dr. Buxner is a local author who is employed at the Planetary Science Institute. Together with Dr. Lebofsky, an active scientist and space educator, this workshop will include hands-on STEM lessons for elementary students to learn about the Moon - including its formation and geography, the lunar phases, cratering, a history of NASA's robotic and manned lunar missions, the effect of the Moon on Earth's tides and nocturnal animals, future careers in space science, recent scientific discoveries by NASA, and more!

You will receive a STEMAZing kit worth $450 that includes all of the materials for you to teach all of the lessons!

Special thanks to the 2025 STEMAZing Institute title sponsor, Tucson Electric Power and the Planetary Science Institute! The generous STEMAZing Kits of equipment and supplies teachers receive would not be possible without their continued support.

This workshop is part of the STEMAZing Institute. The STEMAZing Project’s philosophy on teacher professional development is simple: It must be hands-on and engaging – putting the educators in the seat of the students to experience STEM lessons firsthand. It must provide the educators with the equipment and supplies they need to implement the lessons and activities in their classrooms the next day if they choose. It must be facilitated by master educators who have themselves been in the classroom.
